Air Pollution and Your Skin

Your skin comes into battle with a variety of negative factors every day, UV rays, changeable weather, dehydration,  lack of sleep, coffee intake, eating sugar filled items on the go, dirt, chemicals and air pollution.

Here at VOYA we keep reiterating the fact that- it only takes 20 seconds for your skin to absorb any chemical that touches it and for that chemical to enter the bloodstream.

Pollution is a contentious topic today, as we know pollution is threatening not just the environment and the planet but there is an abundance of new research in 2017 to show the direct relation of damaged skin due to pollution. Unfortunately, this is a problem that is only getting worse.

If you live in a city, as 66% of Ireland’s population does, the issue of ‘’city skin’ is possibly affecting you right now.

New research has discovered that toxin fumes are the primary cause of skin ageing in polluted cities such as London, New York and Beijing. According to this research other factors should as sunburn, sunbeds, over UV exposure, smoking and diet all contribute to ageing skin but for pigment spotting on the cheeks and hands, air pollution is the major driver.

“It is not a problem that is limited to China or India – we have it in Paris, in London, wherever you have larger urban agglomerations you have it,” he said. “In Europe everywhere is so densely populated and the particles are being distributed by the wind, so it is very difficult to escape from the problem.” Research by Krutmann

“92% of the world’s population lives in an environment that is too polluted, which causes numerous adverse impacts on the skin, such as early aging, cutaneous malfunctions or overproduction of sebum,” shares Algae News– BiotechMarine to the press.

Skin Problems Cause by Pollution

  1. Wrinkles and age spots
  2. Hyper-Pigmentation on cheeks

How Seaweed Protects the Skin Against Pollution

Seaweed extracts are anti-microbial and have a solid reputation as a natural healer. Seaweed is now known as a superfood for the skin due to its ability to tone hydrate and detoxify. In general, using certified organic products reduces the number of chemicals in contact with your skin, which can be up to 200 daily with non-organic skincare. Parabens and other chemicals found in daily cosmetics not only destroy the beneficial properties of seaweed, but can harm your skin health and the environment. Seaweeds contain anti-inflammatory properties along with algal polyphenols and carotenoids, which are powerful antioxidants, and have also been proven to fight the major causes of ageing caused by air pollution.

These natural antioxidants in seaweed are clinically proven to fight free radicals & pollution damage, they do this by stopping free radicals from reacting with the skin. Seaweed organically strengthens the skin’s barrier, and the healthier your skin’s barrier is,  the better you are protected from chemical damage and air pollution.

Latest Algae / Seaweed Research by Krutmann

“If your skin is really healthy, it is quite a good barrier, the top layer is like a roof – flattened cells like tiles separated by protective lipids. Certain skin care products are very disruptive to the surface of the skin. A darling of the industry ( non organic) is retinoids, but these have a very profound negative effect on barrier function. Algae has the ability to form a symbiotic relationship with other organisms (hosts) mutually better their chances of survival. Algae works alongside other micro-organisms and creates surface barriers around its hosts in order to protect them against various external harms.”
