It’s all systems go here at VOYA HQ, as we get ready for our Global Wellness Day event in Strandhill. Founded in Turkey, Global Wellness Day, is an international non profit event that aims to help people recognise the value of their lives, release stress and focus on making peace with themselves. Tomorrow June 11th, events all over the world will take place encouraging thousands of people to take some time out of their busy lives and ask the question, “How can I live a healthier and better life all year round?”.

Don’t worry if after making the effort on June 11th, you don’t feel instantly zen — wellness is one journey that is definitely a marathon and not a sprint.

The best way to get on your way to wellness is to follow the Seven Steps of the Global Wellness Day, Manifesto.

Step 1: Walk for an Hour

Walking for just one hour, three days a week, is a great way to decompress, relieve stress and increase your circulation. Also, if you’re not currently very active, walking is one of the simplest forms of exercise to get you going.

Step 2: Drink more Water

Our skin, our brain, our lungs, and even our bones rely on water to function properly, so there’s no surprise that it’s so important to our wellness. We have spoken before about the importance of drinking water for a healthy pregnancy, but even if you’re not expecting you should be aiming to drink 2 litres of water every day. Why not swap out one of your afternoon teas or coffees for a glass of water.

Step 3: Give Up Plastic Bottles

Global Wellness Day isn’t just about looking after ourselves, it’s also about the well being of other people in our lives. With this in mind, there are two ways that reducing our use of plastic bottles can benefit us. Firstly, there’s the environmental impact. Making bottles just to meet one country like the United States’ demand for bottled water alone uses millions of barrels of oil annually. This is a waste of the same amount of energy that could power almost 200,000 homes annually.

Secondly, there’s the effects of plastic on our bodies. Some research warns of the dangers of bisphenol A or BPA, an industrial chemical used to make certain plastics, that can seep into our food and drink. Even if you are only considering cutting down on your use of plastic bottles, avoid re-using and refilling disposable plastic water or soft drink bottles to avoid any BPA contamination.

Step 4: Eat Organic Foods

Never forget that your health is your wealth. If buying processed foods is keeping costs down now, it’s possible you could end up paying the price later in life. As well as getting plenty of fruit and vegetables into your diet, it’s in your best interest to try and source organic food from local and sustainable producers. As well as supporting local business and supporting farming families, you’ll have more knowledge about your food’s origins and other factors such as its exposure to pesticides.

Step 5: Do a Good Deed

It may sound silly, but have a think for a moment about the last time that you did a good deed for someone or when you yourself were the beneficiary of a random act of kindness. Research shows that being kind to others, accepting kindness from strangers and even spoiling ourselves every so often can lead to happiness. You don’t have to change the world in one day, simply take a small step and give a colleague a lift home when it’s raining, or lend a sympathetic ear to a friend in need.

Step 6: Have a Family Dinner

If you read the VOYA blog post: 4 Steps for a Digital Detox  you’ll understand the importance of blocking off an hour a night in which you and your significant others keep your phones and tablets switched off and enjoy a family catch up. If you’re away from the family home, try and sit down with your friends or flat mates at dinner time. Experiences are amplified when you share them with someone else, and that goes for enjoying food too.

Step 7: Go to Sleep at 10:00pm

It’s a lot easier to take on these seven steps when your batteries are fully charged, and less difficult to maintain a positive outlook when you’re well rested. Furthermore, some studies suggest that the time slot between 11pm and 4am is the optimum time for skin cell regeneration.

The day will consist of yoga, meditation, dance therapy, talks and a variety of wellness activities hosted by some well know and very inspirational guest speakers from Sligo.
